Courses

Designing for Healthier Communities

2.0 AIA LU-HSW / PDH / USGBC/ LA CES

Maureen M. Mahle; Managing Director, Sustainable Housing Services
Steven Winter Associates, Inc.

AIA Course ID 401COM
USGBC 0920015212

The impact of buildings & facilities on human health is now an important part of sustainable design standards. Learn the importance of public health to the future of our communities and how it can be incorporated into large-scale residential and mixed-use projects. Some extraordinary new data, and a small army of dedicated Green Professionals, is changing project design parameters to a more health-oriented approach.

Cold Liquid Applied Roofing, Waterproofing and Traffic Systems for Building Designs

1.0 AIA LU-HSW / PDH

Mansoor Maleki
ALT Global, LLC – a Westwood Group Company

AIA Course ID 369RFG

Understand the advantages of high-performance liquid-applied systems. When considering life-cycle cost, the most durable solutions become even more attractive. Learn how these high-performance systems can be used for repair and retrofit projects. Upon completion of the course, attendees will have the knowledge needed to design and implement high-performing, sustainable roofs for a wide range of construction projects.

Innovative Hardscaping Site Solutions

1.0 AIA LU-HSW / PDH / LA CES

Daniel G. Moreland, LEED GA
BELGARD Architectural Representative with Anchor, an Oldcastle Company.

AIA Course ID 359PAV

Introduction to concrete hardscape products and design principles. Advice is offered as to how to properly detail and specify hardscape projects.

Geothermal Heating and Cooling Systems

2.0 AIA LU-HSW / PDH / USGBC / LA CES

Zachary Fink
Vice President, ZBF Geothermal, LLC

USGBC 920012343
AIA Course ID 392GEO

One of the most cost-effective energy use reduction strategies is ground source heat pumps for new construction and renovation projects. The basics of the different varieties of geothermal systems are elucidated and, then, the audience is shown recently completed projects that successfully incorporated geothermal systems into their design. Aspects of geothermal design that are highlighted include life-cycle cost analysis, energy savings analysis, available tax breaks, and integration into sustainably designed buildings.

Residential Design Using Modular/Prefab Construction

2.0 AIA LU-HSW / PDH / USGBC/ LA CES

Laszlo Kiss RA
Studio Kiss

USGBC 920015434
AIA Course ID 400MOD

Attendees will gain a thorough understanding of both prefabricated (prefab) and modular construction for residential applications. Learn about the energy efficiencies available, as well as the wide variety of design outcomes possible. The greatest advantages of modular are that management and scheduling become simplified and the budget is reduced. There is a different basic process that is followed in modular construction, but – as witnessed in some relevant case studies – the results can be superlative.

Using Accessible Design Standards to Produce Code-Compliant Buildings

8.0 AIA LU-HSW / PDH / 4 LA CES

Dominic Marinelli

AIA Course ID 404ACC

As buildings & facilities become more complex – there is an even greater need to include accessibility features in our designs. The requirements of ANSI A117.1 (2009), Standard for Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities are now mandated by law throughout the US and must be addressed from preliminary design down to the final detailing of all commercial, multi-family and institutional projects.

The new emphasis in the design community in public health is exhibited by a strong need to make buildings accessible. This is a body of knowledge that has become a mandatory prerequisite for your design projects.

Attendees will learn how to incorporate accessible features during various project design stages to produce truly sustainable projects and fully code-compliant buildings & facilities and will take home a greater appreciation of the many wrinkles that exist and how to deal with them.
